Job Description

As a volunteer drug educator you will be delivering drug education presentations to Junior and Senior High School students. Your presentation will provide students with information about how drugs and alcohol affect the mind and body.

The volunteer drug educator job includes

  • Provide students with the latest information about drugs like Ketamine, GHB, Methamphetamine, Marijuana, Ecstasy and more
  • Provide the class with a non-judgmental environment where students can ask questions and examine the consequences of drug & alcohol use
  • Increase awareness and connect students with a variety of resources available in the community
  • Strengthen knowledge, build protective factors, and develop healthier, more resilient individuals

Commitment and Shifts

We ask our new volunteer drug educators to commit to making 3 presentations a month, or a total of 27 presentations during the school year (September to June). Presentations range from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours long (plus travel time). At the end of the first year, volunteers have the option of reducing their commitment to one shift every four weeks. After one year, volunteer may also decide to increase their involvement by participating in the training of new volunteers.

Training

As a volunteer drug educator for the Distress Centre you will receive 12 hours of in-class training, part of which will be delivered by an officer from the Calgary City Police Drug Unit. You will have an opportunity to observe senior volunteer drug educators in a classroom setting to prepare you for your presentations.
