Joan Roy was named Executive Director for Distress Centre on June 10th, 2013. Joan is a member of a number of community committees including the Calgary Domestic Violence Coalition, Calgary Council for Addiction and Mental Health and the Canadian Distress Line Network-Executive. In addition to Social Work, Joan holds the designation of Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP). Joan led a city wide initiative that developed partnerships and protocols for more effective delivery of crisis services in Calgary in the early 2000’s. The service delivery partnerships that were developed then are still in operations today. From this initiative, Distress Centre Calgary is known as the hub of crisis services in Calgary. The backbone of this initiative was the development of solid relationships with police, EMS and mental health mobile teams in addition to other counselling and community agencies.
She has worked closely with the Aboriginal community in the area of mental health, suicide prevention and wellness. Joan is also a certified ‘Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training’ workshop trainer and helps new trainers become efficient in the delivery of the workshop. Many of the workshops Joan facilitates are within Aboriginal Communities. She is a lifetime member of the Metis Nation of Alberta..
