Listen Up! Calgary is an annual charity concert where all the proceeds from ticket sales, the silent auction and the 50/50 raffle are donated to Distress Centre Calgary. What makes us all the more excited about this event is that it’s organized by one of our own crisis line volunteers, Rich Paxton and his wife, Lauren. Rich decided to organize the event after he began volunteering on our crisis lines, when he realized how critical our services are and how many people in Calgary are not aware of them. The issue is a personal one, as Rich lost his own mother to suicide in 2007. Since the event’s inception in 2014 it has raised approximately $18,000 for Distress Centre’s crisis services, counselling and referrals.
On top of volunteering with us, Rich is also the lead singer of the band, Free The Cynics, who played at both Listen Up! events, as well as an eclectic mix of other local bands and artists.
The 3rd annual concert took place on October 15, 2016 and raised $8000 for our crisis services!
